Dorothy Bury Shaw

Dorothy Bury Shaw is an award-winning artist and poet. Born and raised in Chicago, she graduated from the Chicago Academy of Fine Art. Early in her career she taught art while freelancing as an editorial illustrator. Her work appeared in Chicago Magazine, the Chicago Sun Times, Midwest Magazine, and others. In recent years, her focus has returned to the creation of her own art and poetry.
In her personal life, Dorothy is inspired by nature with its wild and wonderful differences. In doing so, she also appreciates the endless rich variety in human experiences. She sees beauty in diversity and celebrates those brave and bold souls who live authentic lives, owning their truths without apology.

She says, "Deep down, I have a rich inner landscape where love casts its light upon the shadows of my missteps and heartaches. Something greater than myself always emerges to guide me. From this place I create mixed media art works with intricate detail. There are symbols and subtleties to engage both the intellect and the spirit. First, I compose an ink drawing which takes a considerable time. Sometimes I work on printed texts or maps, going on to add watercolor and colored pencil. Through layering line, color, and incorporating collage details, the artwork takes on a life of its own. Days, weeks, and often months pass as the piece unfolds before me. I experience an undeniable joy flowing from my heart, through my pens, pencils, and brushes onto the paper. Showing my work is the bravest thing I’ve ever done. May it give you joy."
